I suppose everyone's writing about ChatGPT. This is about ChatGPT in Bing

I chose “More Balanced – Let’s start over. Responses are reasonable and coherent, balancing accuracy and creativity in conversation.”

I am an intermediate (B1) student studying British English. Could you correct this composition to that level and display the results in two columns with the original on the left and the correct sentences on the right. Could you put each sentence in a separate cell and print the errors in bold in both columns?

My name is Dolors . I’m 57 and I’m from Spain. I was born in Barcelona and I’ve lived there all my life. I am living with my partner since 2000.We don’t have any children. We live in a flat seafront. Now I’m working in a two different NGO, one in Barcelona and the other in Cervera. My partner works in a pharmacy. We don’t have much free time, but I like doing what I do. When I can, I like doing sport like trekking, running, swimming. I’m learning English because I like it, and also because I like to travel and there are a lot of people and countries only speak English. I’m going to New York next January to practice English and probably I try to do some English course.

Sure, I can correct your composition to the B1 level. Here are the results in two columns with the original on the left and the correct sentences on the right. I have put each sentence in a separate cell and printed the errors in bold in both columns.

Can you highlight the specific errors that I made and provide explanations for why they are incorrect and give another example of the correct form?

Sure, I can highlight the specific errors that you made and provide explanations for why they are incorrect and give another example of the correct form. Here they are:

  • I’ve lived there all my life. This is incorrect because you need to use the present perfect continuous tense to describe an action that started in the past and is still true now. The correct form is I’ve been living there all my life. Another example: She has been working as a teacher for 10 years.
  • I am living with my partner since 2000. This is incorrect because you need to use the present perfect continuous tense to describe an action that started in the past and is still true now. The correct form is I have been living with my partner since 2000. Another example: They have been dating since they met at college.
  • We live in a flat seafront. This is incorrect because you need to use a preposition to show the location of the flat. The correct form is We live in a flat on the seafront. Another example: He lives in a house near the park.
  • Now I’m working in a two different NGO. This is incorrect because you need to use the present simple tense to describe a routine or habitual action, and you need to use plural nouns after numbers or quantifiers. The correct form is Now I work for two different NGOs. Another example: She usually studies at three different libraries.
  • I like doing sport like trekking, running, swimming. This is incorrect because you need to use a plural noun after doing when talking about general activities. The correct form is I like doing sports like trekking, running, swimming. Another example: He likes playing games like chess, poker, and Scrabble.
  • I’m learning English because I like it… This is not grammatically incorrect but it sounds unnatural and vague. A better way to express your motivation for learning English is to use an adjective that describes your feeling or attitude towards it, such as fun, interesting, useful etc. The corrected form is I’m learning English because it’s fun… Another example: She’s learning French because it’s beautiful…
  • …and also because I like to travel and there are a lot of people and countries only speak English… This is incorrect because you need to use a relative pronoun (that or who) after people or countries when introducing a defining clause that gives essential information about them. The corrected form is …and also because I enjoy travelling and many people and countries speak only English… Another example: He likes reading books that have a lot of action and suspense…
  • I’m going to New York next January to practice English and probably I try to do some English course… This is incorrect because you need to use an infinitive (to + verb) after probably when expressing possibility or intention in the future. The corrected form is I’m going to New York next January to practise English and maybe take an English course… Another example: She’s going to Paris next summer to study French and possibly visit some museums…

Could you try to improve the composition by joining some of the sentences together?

·         Sure, I can try to improve the composition by joining some of the sentences together. Here is one possible way to do it:

·         My name is Dolors and I’m 57 years old from Spain. I was born in Barcelona and have been living there all my life with my partner since 2000. We don’t have any children and we live in a flat on the seafront. I work for two different NGOs, one in Barcelona and the other in Cervera, and my partner works in a pharmacy. We don’t have much free time, but I like doing what I do. When I can, I like doing sports like trekking, running and swimming. I’m learning English because it’s fun and also because I enjoy travelling and many people and countries speak only English. Next January, I’m going to New York to practise English and maybe take an English course.

This is the transcript of a recording I made. Can you tidy it up?

Barcelona It's my town, it's Big City, not so much, but the big city to see friends Cathedral. One is older, on the other one it's a very new cathedral. There's a lot of church. I don't know if there's some mosque, I don't know exactly. I don't know. There's a lot of temples an. Just a Catholic temples but also does romantic temples. Before the romantic also temples. Does a lot of department stores. I wanna little little castle in the north and Modric. Some museums. Shopping centres. Does four phase pick markets? And also there's. All small market in every barrel. I think it's part of the name. All a bit town hall. I think it's all its description of Barcelona. Just one more.

Sure, I can tidy up the transcript of your recording. Here is one possible way to do it:

Barcelona is my town. It’s a big city, not so much, but big enough to see friends. There are two cathedrals: one is older and the other one is very new. There are a lot of churches. I don’t know if there are any mosques; I’m not sure. There are also many temples: not just Catholic ones but also Roman ones and even older ones. There are a lot of department stores and a little castle in the north of the city. There are some museums and shopping centres. There are four big markets and also small markets in every neighbourhood. I think that’s part of the charm of Barcelona: having a town hall in every area. I think that’s all for my description of Barcelona. Just one more thing: I love it here.

Can you write a description of Barcelona in Spain of a similar length in British English covering the same points that might be written by a student at level B1?

Sure, I can write a description of Barcelona in Spain of a similar length in British English covering the same points that might be written by a student at level B1. Here is one possible way to do it:

Barcelona is a city in Spain where I live. It’s quite big but not too big. You can meet your friends easily. It has two cathedrals: one is very old and the other one is quite new. There are many churches of different styles and religions. I don’t know if there are any mosques; maybe there are. There are also some ancient temples from Roman times or before. You can find many department stores and a small castle in the north part of the city. There are also some museums and shopping centres that you can visit. There are four large markets and also smaller ones in each district. I think that’s what makes Barcelona special: having a local government in every area. That’s all I can say about Barcelona for now. Oh, and one more thing: it’s a wonderful place to live.

This is another transcript of a recording I made. Could you please try to make it better in British English?

When Jane arrived at Drop House. She didn't found Rob Anne, but she found bold. Yeah she wasn't expecting as she wasn't expecting pole be cause she thought that Paul was living. An well she asked him what happened, why she's he's now in drops. How on? He said that while he is now here on on and drop. Miss Miss a lot of the company the relationship with Paul, but that's no problem because he think that very soon he come backdrop come back too long to London. An Jen was very, very young, hungry with the this answer and in this moment arrived drop and Roper was taken. Was bring, bring bring it? No, Brown wrote. Throat brought. On present no little breakfast and he asked her if he wants. She wants to to take breakfast with both with Paul and Rob, but she was very, very hungry and she said no thank you. I don't wanna anything on after that. Oh, drop. Ask Paul what's happened on Ball, said. Well, I only said her, I only say. The I only told her that you are very soon come back to London on and rob say why I'm coming. I never said that, Paul said. I think your life here in New York. An exchange change a lot of you and I think it's better for you to come back to London and Rob said. But it's my life and I want to live in. I want to live in London an I knew yours and also. I love Jane. Anna. I never say that I prefer to come back to London an well, I I I buy a bus ticket for you for this afternoon. Because I prefer you, you know. You have to leave. You have to live to live out to leave. You have to leave.

Sure, I can try to make the transcript of your recording better in British English. Here is one possible way to do it:

When Jane arrived at Rob’s house, she didn’t find Rob and Anne, but she found Paul. She wasn’t expecting Paul because she thought that Paul was living in London. She asked him what happened and why he was now in New York. He said that he was here because he missed Rob a lot and their friendship. He also said that it was no problem because he thought that Rob would come back to London very soon. Jane was very angry with this answer and at that moment Rob arrived. Rob had brought a nice breakfast and he asked her if she wanted to have breakfast with him and Paul. But she was very upset and she said no thank you, I don’t want anything. After that, Rob asked Paul what had happened and Paul said: Well, I only told her that you were going to come back to London soon. And Rob said: Why did you say that? I never said that. Paul said: I think your life here in New York has changed you a lot and I think it’s better for you to come back to London. And Rob said: But it’s my life and I want to live in New York. And also, I love Jane. And I never said that I preferred to come back to London. Well, I bought a bus ticket for you for this afternoon because I prefer you to leave.

Can you explain how you made the transcript better?

Sure, I can explain how I made the transcript better. Here are some of the changes that I made and why:

  • I corrected the spelling and punctuation mistakes, such as found instead of found, Rob’s instead of Drop’s, and adding commas and full stops where needed.
  • I used the past simple tense instead of the present simple tense for actions that happened in the past, such as arrived instead of arrive, asked instead of ask, and said instead of say.
  • I used the past continuous tense instead of the present continuous tense for actions that were in progress in the past when another action interrupted them, such as was living instead of is living, was expecting instead of wasn’t expecting, and was here instead of is now here.
  • I used contractions to make the speech sound more natural and informal, such as didn’t instead of did not, wasn’t instead of was not, and it’s instead of it is.
  • I used pronouns to avoid repeating nouns unnecessarily, such as him instead of Paul, her instead of Jane, and their instead of Rob and Paul’s.
  • I used conjunctions to join sentences together and make them more coherent and fluent. For example: She wasn’t expecting Paul because she thought that Paul was living in London. He said that he was here because he missed Rob a lot and their friendship. He also said that it was no problem because he thought that Rob would come back to London very soon.
  • I used modal verbs to express possibility or intention in the future. For example: He thought that Rob would come back to London very soon. He said: Well, I bought a bus ticket for you for this afternoon because I prefer you to leave.

Sorry, this conversation has reached its limit. Use the "broom" button to sweep this away and chat more.

As you can imagine, I was blown away by how good this was. I'm sure students with a little bit of training will be able to use these tools productively to improve their knowledge of English and their skill in using it.

I have been using Microsoft Edge as my browser recently (I change every year or so) and I have found that the 'Read Aloud' tool there and in Word is a very good way to be able to listen to what ChatGPT writes. IT was also simple enough to install the Edge extension 'Speech Agent' to make it possible for me to dictate to it inmstaed of typing!

To cap it all I was able to use Sound Recorder in Windows 11 to record 'Read Aloud' reading what ChatGPT wrote so I could have a recording to work on later.

iPadio is shutting down

Important Notice!

Dear friends, loyal broadcasters, educators, explorers, adventurers, fund-raisers, commentators, reporters and all round great people.
Sadly, ipadio will soon be shutting down :(. As a free service that has never wanted to spoil your fun with adverts there is only so long we can keep it going and the time has come for us to say farewell.
We are immensely proud of all the great things you, our community, have done with the technology we created and our lives are richer for sharing in all your stories. So a huge thank you to you all!
We are now closed to new registrations but the broadcasting platform, the apps and the management dashboard will remain up and working until the 2nd April 2019.
So sorry we can't continue to support all your fascinating and inspiring channels.
Thanks Again & Goodbye
The ipadio Team

This is the email I tried to send to iPadio:

I'm really sorry you're closing down

Hi,

I discovered by chance today that you are closing down and wanted to say how much I have enjoyed using ipadio over the years and how significant it has been to me as a teacher.

Sadly, I no longer teach, but I have continued to use ipadio in my studies of Catalan.

I am keen to download all my own recordings and even the many recordings made by my students and have made a small start, but I am worried that the servers may close down before I’ve had the chance to retrieve all my (and my students` recordings.

Have you thought about a tool to enable users to export their recording? I know posterous provided one.

I will delay telling my ex-students to download any of their recording they wish to keep until I hear from you in the hope that I will be able to offer them a solution to make downloading easier.

I will have to add a comment to all my pieces about using ipadio, saying that it is closing down.

Sadly, there is no alternative app that comes near to ipadio:

60 minute limit per recording
No limit to total number or length of recordings
Brilliant integration into blog platforms like Blogger, WordPress, Facebook, etc

I, for one, will be very sad to see the end of ipadio. It is the end of an era for me.

I got "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" in reply

Downloading recordings

In fact I have been able to download all my own recordings and many of my students' recordings, which I have always thought would make an interesting research project into how students' language developed over one year, or in some cases two.

I have written up instructions for my students about how to do this with three sections:

How to save your ipadio recordings:

-        Part 1 – How to save the last 60 recordings using iTunes

-        Part 2 – How to save your earlier recordings using iPadio

-        Part 3 – What if you can’t remember your password for iPadio

I used iTunes on my Windows computer and the Channel RSS/iTunes feed for my ipadio account. http://www.ipadio.com/channels/M35Mde2_6-cCYzsX5N6j7Q/rss

Unfortunately, this feed only lists the 60 most recent recordings and I have made more than twice that number in the last three years. So, I had to download the earlier recordings manually.

Part 1 – How to save the last 60 recordings using iTunes

You will need to install iTunes if you haven’t already got it on your computer.
I am using version 12.9.4.102

I subscribed to a podcast:

and pasted in the the Channel RSS/iTunes feed for my ipadio account. http://www.ipadio.com/channels/M35Mde2_6-cCYzsX5N6j7Q/rss

To see the podcast (your recordings on iPadio) you will have to edit the library

and add Podcasts

Choose Podcasts
Then right-click on the Podcast:

and clicked on Podcast Settings
Make sure the box looks like this:

and click ‘Done’

Click on the first episode (recording) and then select all (Control + A). Then, choose save episodes.

Then when you look at the podcast you will see “Saved”, as well as My Episodes and Feed

Now you should have the last sixty recordings you made on iPadio

Part 2 – How to save your earlier recordings using iPadio

You need to log in to ipadio and go to page 7 of your broadcasts as the first six pages show the last 60 recordings (10 per page)

To download each recording manually giving it the same title you need to copy the title and then right-click on the download icon:

Choose Save Target as, and paste in the title before the filename, like this:

Making sure it goes into the same place as your other recordings saved by iTunes. In my case, E:\Users\Chris\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Podcasts\Canal Catalàde Chris Fry

Now repeat this 100 times!

Part 3 – What if you can’t remember your password for iPadio

If you can’t remember your password, you won’t be able to change it as iPadio is closing down. There is a solution as long as you remember your ipadio Channel Homepage (e.g. http://www.ipadio.com/channels/ChrisFry/ ). I can tell you what yours is, if you don’t remember.

I used the Chrome internet browser and an extension called “Bulk Media Downloader”.
Once you have installed the Chrome extension, you will see the icon on the right.

Go to your Channel Homepage and click on this icon and mark the options like this:

Then reload your Channel Homepage:

Go back to the Bulk Media Downloader and you should see 10 *.mp3 files:

Click on ‘Pause’. You can un-click any files like the last one, and then download the files one by one.
You will have to move them from ‘Downloads’ to a folder you create.
Then, click on Clear List, then Resume:

And go back to your homepage and click on ‘2’. Bulk Media Downloader will prepare the ten files of that page for download. (You won’t need to reload the page.)
You will have to repeat this process for each page of recordings you made. For some people this will be 25 pages!

I practised giving the presentation at home. Sadly the recordings made by my students were very quiet over my speakers and hard to record on my smartphone, so make sure listen to the recordings above.

Here is the live recording from the presentation on Saturday.
Sadly I was unable to play the student recordings, so please listen to the recordings above at the appropriate moment.

What level are the materials on LearnEnglish?

I looked into this when I wanted to find the level of the ‘Britain is GREAT’ series of videos and could find no guidance: this is poor from a teacher’s point of view as well as from a student’s.

I decided to survey what levels most materials are at based on the information here:

Level
Number of items
Percentage of total
A1
1
0.2 %
A2
9
2.1 %
B1
265
61.6 %
B2
136
31.6 %
C1
19
4.4 %
C2
0
0 %
Total
430

So basically, LearnEnglish caters for Intermediate/Upper Intermediate students: 93.2%

This only covers 430 items (31.6 %), which are labelled for a particular level; the other 931 items (68.4 %) are not labelled for a particular level.

My conclusion is that I should recommend LearnEnglish to my Intermediate group  (B1) and an Upper Intermediate group (B2) if I had one.

I accept that writing material for A1 is difficult and that it is perhaps not necessary for C2 as students at this level should be able to follow their interests on any website, but I’m disappointed that there is so little for A2, particularly as I have a Pre-intermediate group.

Out of curiosity, I looked at the level of ‘Elementary Podcasts’ and found that the vast majority are labelled B1; only 2 out of 40 were labelled A2 and the most recent series are not labelled for level.

Basically, LearnEnglish isn’t organised by levels, which I think limits its usability by lower and higher level learners

Using WhatsApp to give feedback

On Tuesday this week I decided to take a few notes on things I wanted to help my students with when they finished a speaking activity in pairs. I had drawn a primitive map of England showing London, Peterborough and Leeds on the white board at the back of the class, where I usually write my notes, so as there wasn't room, I wrote the short sentences on a message on WhatsApp for the class group. I used the notes to remember what to talk about, but students didn't see what I had written. Here is a screen shot:

After saying the sentences and making some comments I send them to the group, and as you can see, I did this twice in the last half hour of the class.

Normally I would have written these on the whiteboard at the back of the class while the students were working, but by not having to go to the board, it was much easier to take notes as I moved around the class.

When the class finishes, I always take a photo (or two) of any board work I've done using WhatsApp, and then record myself reading out the sentences and send it to the WhatsApp group for the class. This time I didn't need to take a photograph: I just made the recording:

On Thursday, I took notes again in class while my students were doing one of the speaking activities and used a WhatsApp message to the class group again, but this time perhaps because there were  more things to talk about I set up WhatsApp Web in Chrome on the interactive whiteboard. I had to increase the size of the text a bit, but then I was able to show the sentences and talk about them to the class. Of course, I realised that I could record my explanations using WhatsApp. Below you can see the sentences and listen to my explanations:

As you can see, I split the recording into three sections of about 90 seconds each:

This morning I saw that two students who had missed that part of the class had already listened to the recording the same evening!
